Welcome to Narrative Network UK

Narrative Network UK is for practitioners who would like to be in touch with others who are interested in Narrative Practice.

Many people have spoken to us about the difficulties of being the only narratively trained person in a given work setting and the Narrative Network is a response to this.  We hope that the Narrative Network may enable narrative practitioners to find other like minded people who either have similar interests or who are local to them. It’d be great if it meant that people could find some mutual support for their work this way.  We hope it will contribute to a strengthening of the narrative community in the UK and may enable people to get together for projects that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.  We hope that you will find Narrative Network UK

In 2009 I was invited to join 'Healing Words', a therapeutic storytelling project which travelled to Israel and Palestine to work with groups of Arabs and Jews, using storytelling as a way of encouraging dialogue and mutual understanding.

In 2010 I was appointed as Storyteller-in-Residence at a community art gallery in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island Canada to work with children and adolescents. In 2011, I attended a 'narrative medicine' training with the psychiatrist Dr Lewis Mehl-Madrona. I will continue to develop and share my interests in narrative and healing throughout the coming year and look forward to meeting others with similar interests.

Area of work

Child and Adolescent Mental Health

Additional information

I am currently working in Essex as a Senior Specialist Educational
Psychologist; (Child and Adolescent Mental Health).  I completed the
Level One Narrative Practice training and have been trying to assimilate
these approaches into my work .  It would be brilliant to be able to share with others ideas for using Narrative approaches, and also for debating and discussing the underpinning ideas and framework as I find that I need to re-visit this quite often! I would also like to read about casework / examples of how Narrative approaches have been used in practice and the perceived impact / implications of this.

Area of work

Adult mental health services

Additional information

I work in adult mental health services as a clinical psychologist.  I am
particularly interested in how service users stories get written by their
interactions with Services over the years, and in narrative approaches
to recovery – particularly with people whose sense of identity has been
compromised or threatened by their experiences of MH problems. I am also interested in how teams work together, and organisational issues.

I am currently doing the Diploma level course with the Narrative Institute which I am really enjoying.  A colleague and I meet for peer supervision where we (try) to sustain a narrative approach to the consultation – and we are doing some introductory training for qualified colleagues and clinical psychology trainees in the near future.

Additional information

I run training courses, workshops and work as psychotherapist and supervisor at this institute in Belgium. We developed a narrative network of the Low Countries that organizes conferences, and functions as a forum to exchange ideas and inspire each other.  As a therapist my expertise is on working with children, youngsters and families in difficult contexts (violence, abuse, psychiatric problems and trauma) and working in creative ways when speaking becomes difficult. In some publications we also tried to give clients a voice.

My hope is to enlarge the narrative connections and I’m always open for new ideas or interested in new projects and ideas.
